We knew that coming to Siem Reap (the town closest to Angkor ruins) on New Year's Eve was not the greatest idea but at least we got to spend it in good company, look who we caught up with again!

There is not much to be said about the town of Siem Reap itself. It is a tourist hub and so everything logically costs more than anywhere else, it is not very pretty and it can get a little stressful at times. Be prepared that the tuk tuk drivers will be after you constantly, the street vendors will yell 'want something laaaaaadyyyyyyy' repeatedly, the traffic will make it impossible for you to cross the street, the so-called Pub Street will make you think you are back the tacky Khao San Road of Bangkok...

You will spend most of your time outside among the temples but there is more one can do around, get a massage, go to see an orphanage (increasingly popular and increasingly scammy), volunteer, donate blood, see a concert supporting a local hospital, visit the Landmine Museum ... It is easy to come here for three days and end up staying almost a week like we did.
